We Deserve Quiet Nights Without Construction Noise

CalTrans will conduct loud construction on our residential street every weeknight, 10pm-5am, until Feb. 6 at the earliest, unless we make our voices heard. Our mission is simple: to make CalTrans do their construction during daylight

Take Action

The most important action we can take is to continue calling our representatives, as many times as we need to be heard. Make sure to:

  • Say you’re an Alvarado Street resident and that you support Alvarado Neighbors for Peace and Quiet

  • Say you live next to the SR-2 CalTrans Multimodal project

  • tell your personal story about why it’s important to have quiet nights on our street

  • call and email

“My name is ___ and I live on North Alvarado Street next to the SR-2 Cal Trans Multimodal project, and I support Alvarado Neighbors for Peace and Quiet. I’m calling to protest the illegal night work that CalTrans is doing on my street, which violates the City’s noise ordinances. This is important to me because… [tell your personal story]. CalTrans would not be doing this in a wealthy neighborhood. Will your office publicly call for CalTrans to conduct its work during daylight?”

What is happening on N Alvarado?

CalTrans is completing the State Route 2 Multimodal Project, which is a complete refurbishment of our street. The project includes replacing the water main, curbs, and sidewalks. Several agencies and contractors are involved, including LADWP and Sully-Miller, Inc., a private contractor. All agencies and contractors are ultimately accountable to CalTrans.

Why are they working at night?

CalTrans is working at night because they have chosen to prioritize the need to keep traffic low over the human needs of Alvarado residents. If this were a wealthy neighborhood, CalTrans would operate during the day. We need to fight back if we want to reverse CalTrans’ decision.

How long will this go on?

CalTrans is refurbishing the entire street between Sunset and Glendale, which means that they will continue nightly work until Feb. 6 at the earliest. If there are delays, it could go on longer. The sound will not get quieter - every night involves breaking up old concrete and pouring new concrete.

How is this legal?

It’s not. This is a violation of the City’s noise ordinance (see p. 16-18). It’s up to us to call on our elected officials to enforce the noise ordinance.

Will calling really work?

Yes. This is an election year, so our elected officials will be asking for our votes. Other forms of speaking out are important too, such as signing up as a supporter on this website, and speaking up at neighborhood council meetings.

Who are you?

I’m a neighbor on the 1300 block of N Alvarado and CalTrans is keeping me awake! Sleepless nights are hurting my performance at work, and endangering me during my commute by causing me to sleep behind the wheel. Please get in touch at QuietAlvarado@yahoo.com if you have any questions or want to get more involved.
